Dried Buffalo Worms – Unseasoned
Unseasoned dried buffalo worms (Alphitobius diaperinus, the lesser mealworm) in a value bulk pack. Small, light and mild, with nothing added: no salt, no oil, no flavouring.
What they taste like
Buffalo worms are the gentlest edible insect to start with. They taste mildly nutty, a little like toasted oats or puffed rice, and they are smaller and more delicate than mealworms, so they disappear into dishes easily.
How to use buffalo worms
- Sprinkle them over salads, porridge, yoghurt bowls, soups or pasta as a crunchy protein topping.
- Toast them briefly in a dry pan with a pinch of salt or cinnamon for a snack.
- Blend them into a fine flour for baking, protein bars, energy balls or granola.
- Fold them into savoury muffins, crackers or bread dough for extra protein without changing the taste.
Why buffalo worms
Buffalo worms are naturally high in protein and healthy fats and provide fibre (chitin), iron, zinc and vitamin B12. They are approved as a food in the EU and are one of the most efficient protein sources in terms of feed, water and land use.
Storage
Keep in a cool, dry place and reseal after opening. The dried worms keep for months.
Allergen note
Buffalo worms contain protein that may cause reactions in people allergic to crustaceans, molluscs or dust mites.
